Syrian Hamsters Should Be Kept With One Hamster Per Cage: Animal Rescue League Of New York City (Arl
Syrian hamsters are solitary animals. They should always be kept with one hamster per cage. Trying to keep adult Syrian hamsters together is asking for trouble. A well-tended Syrian hamster can live for 3 to 4 years in your home. It can live only 2 1/2 to 3 years in the wild. It's likely older hamsters with battle scars or evidence of a fight have already been taken out of the cage. It is also possible that the hamsters have been separated into same-sex groupings with younger animals. Female Syrian hamers are territorial and enjoy room to run, play, and burrow. Put separate toys for your hamster. Put them in separate crates. Don't be afraid to go bigger. Your pet will thank you. Don't be concerned if the hamster ignores its roommate. . . .
