Dogs use body language to communicate with people and other animals. Appeasement gestures are an example of this type of dog communication. Dogs use body gestures to give people or other animals clues about how they feel. There are a number of things dogs do that are considered an appeasement. A dog who is approached by another dog may look at him and lick his lips. You may also see your own dog do this if you scold him or punish him. How you react to a dog's behavior depends on the situation. In the above example with Toby, the answer was to push through slowly, using lots of positive reinforcement and a happy tone of voice.
