Dogs can develop a fear for a variety of reasons. In many cases, it's just that the dog gets scared of something unfamiliar. The annual Christmas tree is a good example of this. A negative experience with an object can cause a dog to become fearful. There are ways to put your dog at ease if they are fearful of an object. A mild fear can be overcome by using positive reinforcement to help your dog get closer to the object. Introduce your dog some treats when he approaches the object and slowly get your dog comfortable with it. The goal of desensitization is to start with baby steps.
