Peppermint Essential Oil Can Be Toxic To Your Pets, According To A New Study Published In The Journal Of Veterinary Medicine
Peppermint oil is an essential oil. It is extracted from the leaves of the peppermint plant. It does not taste the same as peppermint extract, since the oil is much more concentrated. This concentrated, fragrant oil contains special ingredients of peppermint. Peppermint is considered toxic to cats and may cause health problems for dogs. Very little scientific research has been done on the safety of Peppermint oil in pets. Dogs are less sensitive to peppermint than cats. However, large amounts of concentrated peppermint oil can still be dangerous. Peppersmint oil has been shown to be effective in killing or repelling a variety of insects. Products containing peppermint and other essential oil have also shown some effectiveness in killing fleas. Large, concentrated amounts of Peppermint Oil can be used topically, orally, and diffused into the air. Topical application can cause skin irritability and be absorbed into the body causing more serious issues. Diffused oil can cause respiratory distress and oral oil can result in organ failure, vomiting, diarrhea, and other problems. . . .
